Empowering Communities for Climate Action - The Tree Planting Initiative
Step into the remarkable journey of Kkona Women, represented by their exceptional Climate Action Coordinator Prossy Wasajja Nkinzi, as they lead a recent initiative at Sunrise Junior Academy Kazinga. With unwavering dedication and passion, Kkona Women is at the forefront of the fight against climate change, empowering communities and fostering environmental consciousness through practical action.
On 8th April, 2023, Kkona Women joined forces with Sunrise Junior Academy Kazinga to organize a tree planting event that aimed to unite the local community in Kkona East LC1, Kavumba Ward, Wakiso Town Council, Wakiso District, Uganda. This initiative was designed to create a lasting impact on the environment, as they understood the crucial role of trees in combating climate change. The organization sought to promote sustainability and raise awareness about the urgent need for collective action.
With Kkona Women’s guidance, the pupils and staff of Sunrise Junior Academy Kazinga enthusiastically participated in the tree planting initiative. Together, they planted a diverse array of tree species, ranging from indigenous hardwoods to fruit-bearing trees, with the collective goal of reviving the local ecosystem.
Their expertise as a Climate Action Coordinator ensured that the tree planting process adhered to best practices, guaranteeing the survival and growth of each sapling. They educated the participants about the vital role of trees in soil conservation and providing habitats for diverse wildlife.
Kkona Women’s dedication extended beyond the school premises as they actively engaged the surrounding community. They organized awareness campaigns and workshops, inviting local residents to join hands in safeguarding the environment for future generations. Through their charismatic leadership, they instilled a sense of responsibility in the community, motivating them to take ownership of their ecological footprint.
As a result of the tree planting initiative at Sunrise Junior Academy Kazinga, the once barren school grounds have transformed into a lush green sanctuary, fostering an atmosphere of sustainability and environmental stewardship. The students now take an active role in nurturing the trees they planted, witnessing the power of their actions in contributing to a healthier planet.
Kkona Women’s dedication as a Climate Action Coordinator and their unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on the environment is truly inspiring. Through the initiative on 8th April 2023, they not only contribute to saving the climate but also ignite a spark of eco-consciousness in the hearts of many.
As we celebrate this inspiring tree planting initiative, let us be reminded of the power of unity and the impact of small actions. Together, we can create a sustainable and thriving future for our planet and generations to come. Join us in supporting Kkona Women as they lead the way towards a greener and more resilient world.
Bringing back organic Indigenous crops to the garden
Uganda’s economy is largely dependent on agriculture but our indigenous crops are disappearing at a high speed. The use of tissue culture seedlings, GMOs and chemical fertilizers/pesticides has degraded our once rich soils, Kkona women sustainable agriculturists and Environmental group have therefore decided to campaign to bring back organic/indigenous crops back to the gardens. The project activities will include, theories on permaculture, integrated organic farming, and practical lessons on making planting indigenous crops, making organic fertilizers, making organic pesticides
Campaigning For Climatic Change
“Climatic change is becoming so rampant. Our day-to-day activities account for this factor. Unless we strive, we are bound to face a major problem. These current changes in climate world over are attributed to the continuous release of gases such as carbon dioxide and a number of other activities such as cutting down tree and improper dumping of waste material. It is raising the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. And if we don’t take major action our original nature will be lost” says Daisy Prossy Nangoonzi.
Today, climate change has altered the frequency and amount of rainfall which has led to increased occurrence of droughts, rising and falling water levels, storms, landslides and floating islands.
As noted above, cclimate change has further been boosted by the increasing deforestation around the world. With no trees to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, it is putting the entire world to a very big future problem.
It is our responsibility to maintain the earth and make it a place for the inhabitants in the present and the future generations. We can heal the earth by conserving the existing forests, replanting the cut-down forests, and planting trees and avoiding pollution. We are accountable.
